ATLANTA, USA (March
14, 2002) - Below is a statement from
CARE President Peter. D. Bell concerning
President Bush's announcement today at the
InterAmerican Development Bank to increase U.S.
foreign aid.
"This news is encouraging for CARE, our
global partners, and the communities we serve.
The President's announcement of the Millennium
Challenge Account gives us hope that
humanitarian efforts in the world's poorest
regions will be strengthened. Poverty had begun
to decline in some parts of the world in the
1990s, and we have been alarmed by its recent
resurgence. We look forward to working with the
Administration to channel new resources into
programs where the need is greatest and where
the most victories over poverty can be won.
"CARE's experience in more than 60 countries
around the world has shown us that people want
to help themselves. When we support health,
education and micro-enterprise programs, the
people in these communities are able to create
lasting solutions to their most pressing
problems and become self-sufficient. The funds
President Bush has promised represent a solid
down payment on the resources that will be
needed over time to meet the international goal
of reducing poverty in half by 2015."
