Policy Statement Endorsement

Principles and Guidelines for Early Hearing Detection and Intervention Programs (Joint Committee on Infant Hearing - Year 2000 Position Statement)

The American Academy of Pediatrics (AAP) endorses universal newborn hearing screening, as described in the policy statement, "Newborn and Infant Hearing Loss: Detection and Intervention" (Pediatrics, February 1999).

The Joint Committee on Infant Hearing (JCIH), to which the AAP has two delegates, endorses early detection of, and intervention for infants with hearing loss (early hearing detection and intervention, EHDI) through integrated, interdisciplinary state and national systems of universal newborn hearing screening, evaluation, and family-centered intervention.

The JCIH has issued a Year 2000 Position Statement (PDF file, 150K - 48 pages) [UPDATED 6/22/00], to describe the principles underlying effective EHDI programs, and to provide an accompanying guideline on implementing and maintaining a successful EHDI program. Subsequent to review and acceptance by related AAP national committees, the Academy endorses this Year 2000 Position Statement.
