Newborn Screening Advisory Group Overview:
- The American Academy of Pediatrics, through funding from the Genetic
Services Branch, Maternal and Child Health Bureau, Health Resources
Services Administration (HRSA) is convening an expert panel to address
issues relevant to newborn screening and state newborn screening
programs. The Newborn Screening Advisory Panel is cosponsored by the
National Institutes of Health (NIH), Agency for Health Care Policy and
Research, Centers for Disease Control and Prevention, Alliance of
Genetic Support Groups, Association of Maternal and Child Health
Programs, Association of Public Health Laboratories, and Association of
State and Territorial Health Officials.
-
The purpose of this project is to develop multi-disciplinary
recommendations to advance state newborn screening systems, with
emphasis on the role of public health agencies, providers and families.
A national Newborn Screening Advisory Panel of individuals with diverse
interests and expertise has been appointed. Panel membership includes
physicians, parents, ethicists, directors of state and federal public
health programs, nurses, policy-makers and other individuals involved in
screening and intervention. The expert panels will report on the current
status of specific issues related to newborn screening. The panels will
address 1) Economics of Screening; 2) Ethical, Legal and Social Issues;
3) Medical Home and Systems of Care; 4) Newborn Screening and its Role
in Public Health; 5) Implementation and Assessments Issues.
Both the Task Force on Newborn and Infant Hearing and the Newborn
Screening Advisory Group are administered by the AAP National Center of
Medical Home Initiatives for Children with Special Needs, which is
supported by the US Department of Health and Human Services, Maternal and
Child Health Bureau.
