SHHH supports full funding for the Newborn Hearing Screening and Intervention Act in the upcoming budget for fiscal year 2001.
SHHH Deputy Executive Director Brenda Battat sent a letter to the Chairmen of the Senate and House Subcommittees on Appropriations, as well as to the ranking Democratic member on each subcommittee, affirming SHHH's support of full funding for the Newborn Screening and Intervention Act in the budget for fiscal year 2001. The Act, popularly known as the Walsh Act, after the U.S. Representative who introduced the legislation, provides federal funding to state early intervention infant hearing screening programs. To date, 32 states have enacted legislation to implement infant hearing screening programs. With full federal funding it is hoped that eventually all 50 states will take advantage of the funding and institute hearing screening programs. SHHH supports these efforts.
