ACP-ASIM to Spend $200,000 on TV Ad Campaign to Promote Awareness of Uninsured
College Seeks to Enhance Issue in Presidential, Congressional Races(Washington, DC): The American College of Physicians - American Society of Internal Medicine (ACP-ASIM) plans to spend close to $200,000 on a television ad aimed at raising awareness of the plight of America's more than 43 million uninsured citizens, announced ACP-ASIM President Sandra Adamson Fryhofer, MD, FACP, today. The ad is scheduled to run 20 times on CNN between October 2 and 23 and will be featured on the network's popular political shows "Inside Politics" and "Crossfire." The two shows attract a high percentage of national opinion leaders and policy makers, according to CNN. "Frankly, we are disappointed by the lack of attention being paid to the difficulties faced by the uninsured in this crucial election year," Dr. Fryhofer said. "The proposals by both presidential candidates fall far short of what we consider a crucial step for both parties - a pledge to either create or support a plan to achieve, by sequential steps, the goal of health insurance for all Americans over a specified period of time."
"We have released several reports over the past year clearly showing that a lack of health insurance is a health risk that deserves to be treated with as much urgency as smoking or not wearing safety belts in cars," Dr. Fryhofer said. "We continue to doom millions of our fellow citizens to live sicker and die younger because we refuse to take action on this tragic problem." The ads noted that of the 43 million uninsured Americans, 80 percent live in working families. "They get less preventive care, need more costly emergency care, and are less likely to survive a serious illness like cancer," says the ad. "Let's tell the politicians, it's time to make the health care system work for working people."
