Letter from the AMA to Nancy-Ann DeParle, Administrator,
HCFA |
December 14,

Ms. Nancy-Ann DeParle Administrator Health
Care Financing Administration Department of Health and
Human Services Hubert H. Humphrey Building 200
Independence Avenue, SWB Washington, DC 20201
Dear
Ms. DeParle:
On behalf of the American Medical
Association (AMA), I am writing to congratulate you on the
very successful first meeting of the Executive Committee of
the new Medicare Coverage Advisory Committee (MCAC). You have
assembled a distinguished group of physician leaders and
scientists to serve on this important committee. We are both
impressed and gratified by the obvious commitment of the
committee members and the Health Care Financing Administration
to ensuring that MCAC recommendations will be grounded in
evaluations of available scientific evidence of clinical
effectiveness.
It was also clear from the meeting that
you have fulfilled your promise to create an open, timely, and
accountable process for making national Medicare coverage
decisions. Besides the committee’s focus on identifying the
best methodologies for compiling and assessing the evidence on
each agenda item, the meeting also provided ample opportunity
for public observation and comment on the MCAC deliberations.
We believe your new federal advisory committee is off to a
great start.
If there is anything that the AMA or the
physician community can do to provide assistance to the MCAC
process, please do not hesitate to contact me or my staff.
Best wishes to you and your family for the holiday season.
Sincerely,
E. Ratcliffe Anderson, Jr., MD
