Congressman Brady Wins $1.4 Billion for First
Congressional District
PHILADELPHIA, July 26, 1999 --- Congressman Robert A. Brady
(D., Pa.), a member of the House Armed Services Committee,
says the recently passed FY 2000 Defense Appropriations and
Military Construction Bills will represent an investment of
about $1.4 billion in the First Congressional District.
"I am pleased," said Congressman Brady, who is serving his
first full term in the House, "that my efforts to direct
increased defense and military construction dollars to the
First Congressional District have been successful. I am
especially greatful for the support I have received from
Congressman John P. Murtha, a ranking member of the House
Defense Appropriation Subcommittee."
"These federal dollars coming into the First Congressional
District will leverage private funds and will help spur
economic growth in the district," Congressman Brady said.
The Congressman also supported a 4.8 percent pay raise for
military personnel that will have a direct economic impact on
the families of military personnel in the district.
The FY 2000 Military Construction Appropriation includes
$13.3 million for a casting pit modernization project at the
Naval Foundry and Propeller Center located at the Norfolk
Naval Shipyard Detachment - Philadelphia (formerly the
Philadelphia Naval Shipyard) in the Naval Business Center.
The FY 2000 Defense Appropriation includes:
- $856.4 million for 11 MV-22 Osprey aircraft. A majority
of the contract for the aircraft production has been awarded
to Boeing, located in Delaware County.
- $127 million for improvements to the CH-47 Chinook
helicopter. Much of this work will also be performed at
Boeing's Delaware County plant.
- $427 million for the research and development of the
RAH-66 Comanche helicopter, which Boeing plans to build at
the Delaware County plant.
- $7.5 million for the development of an advanced food
technology system for Navy ships. Aramark, based in
Philadelphia, is the primary competitor for this funding.
- $3 million for the development of Power Node Control
Centers, which integrates the power functions aboard Navy
ships. SPD Technologies, in Philadelphia, is developing the
PNCCs. Congressman Brady worked closely with Congressman Bob
Borski to fund this project.
- $22.7 million for development of the Intercooled
Recuperated Gas TurbineEngine for the Navy's new DD-21 Land
Attack Destroyer. Much of the production and testing of this
engine will be completed at the Norfolk Naval Shipyard
Detachment- Philadelphia.
Congressman Brady said that the Boeing awards were due to a
team effort by area Representatives. "These contracts are
vital to the economic well-being of the greater Philadelphia
area and the intense efforts by Congressmen Curt Weldon, Bob
Borski, Chaka Fattah, Rob Andrews, Joe Hoeffel and James
Greenwood, made it all come together and helped to make this
announcement possible," Congressman Brady said in
conclusion." |
