SUMMARY:
Hearing before
the Subcom on Forests and Public Land Management to examine Department of
Interior (DOI) and USDA Nov. 7, 1997 recommendation that BLM enforce Mining Law
of 1872 limits on mill site claims for private development of
hardrock mineral resources on public lands. DOI and USDA contend that the amount
of non-mineralized public land that may be claimed for mill
sites is limited to 5 acres per mining claim to minimize environmental
degradation.
Hearing was held in response to Mar. 25, 1999 joint
DOI/USDA decision that Battle Mountain Gold (BMG) proposed operating plan for
Crown Jewel Mine in Okanogan County, Wash. violates the 1872 Mining Law limit on
mill site claims.
Supplementary material (p.
88-89) includes a submitted statement.
