Telecommunications, Trade, and Consumer Protection to consider H.R. 2420, the
Internet Freedom and Broadband Deployment Act of 1999, to
promote Internet competition, growth, and customer access, especially in rural
areas.
Focuses on provisions to:
a. Allow
Bell operating companies to transport data over long distance telephone lines
without first opening up local markets to competition as required by the
Telecommunications Act of 1996.
b. Exempt Bell companies
from increased unbundling and resale requirements with respect to high speed
data service.
