SUMMARY:
Committee Serial No. 106-116. Hearing before the Subcom on Telecommunications, Trade, and Consumer Protection to review high-speed broadband data service technology developments and importance of expanding broadband service availability, especially to rural areas. Examines proposals to revise Telecommunications Act (Telecom Act) of 1996 provisions to increase competition among telephone, cable, and other communications providers.
 
Also assesses proposals to allow Bell operating companies to carry data across local access and transport area (LATA) lines without first opening up local markets to competition as required under the Telecom Act.
