BellSouth Comments on Goodlatte-Boucher Data Legislation

For Immediate Release:

May 6, 1999

BACKGROUND: Rep. Bob Goodlatte (R-Virginia) and Rep. Rick Boucher (D-Virginia) have introduced the Internet Freedom Act of 1999, legislation that would reduce regulations on incumbent local telephone companies deploying high-speed Internet access to consumers, especially in non-urban and rural areas.

The following statement should be attributed to Dan Mattoon, BellSouth's vice president, Congressional affairs:

"The important issue of broadband data has received a great deal of interest and mention on Capitol Hill this year. And it will receive a great deal more scrutiny. BellSouth appreciates the efforts of Congressmen Goodlatte and Boucher to promote deployment of broadband technology. We look forward to raising the awareness of this issue in the Congress. We also expect other Members of the House, including Telecommunications Subcommittee Chairman Tauzin, to have an interest in deregulating high-speed Internet access."
