BellSouth® FastAccessSMInternet Service Deployed In 30 Target Markets

Residential and Small Business Customers Who Sign Up for Service by December 31 Receive 30 Days Free

For Immediate Release:

November 11, 1999

ATLANTA - BellSouth today announced the successful completion of its deployment of BellSouth® FastAccessSM Internet service to 30 cities throughout the Southeast. By year's end, the service will be available to 7 million telephone lines that meet the technical specifications, and plans call for a total of 11.5 million lines to be capable of delivering the service at the end of 2000.

"This is the first step in our goal of bringing FastAccess DSL service to every residential and small business customer in the Southeast," said Bob Cunha, vice president, broadband services for BellSouth. "In keeping with our deployment strategy, we will concentrate our efforts on expanding the coverage area in these 30 markets before rolling the service out to additional markets."

BellSouth Fast Access Internet service offers residential consumers and small businesses lightning-fast connection speeds, starting at only $50.00 per month. The service features a maximum download speed of up to 1.5 Mbps and a maximum speed from the user's computer to the Internet of up to 256 Kbps. It is an unlimited, "always-connected" Internet service with no waiting to dial up to connect. Users can talk on the phone and surf the Internet at the same time, on the same phone line. BellSouth FastAccess Internet service virtually eliminates the need for an additional phone line.

"This deployment demonstrates BellSouth's commitment to meet customer demand for high-speed Internet access by delivering DSL service quickly to residential and small business customers," said Cunha. "As the largest DSL service rollout in the Southeast, the completion of our 1999 deployment is terrific news for our customers."

Utilizing state-of-the-art DSL technology, the service works at speeds up to 50 times faster than standard dial-up service. Large data files such as audio files, research documents, product literature and patient records can be downloaded or transferred in seconds rather than minutes. Consumers can make travel reservations online, and small businesses can conduct electronic sales via the Internet in seconds.

BellSouth FastAccess Internet service is available for $50.00 per month to BellSouth residential customers who subscribe to the BellSouth® Complete Choice® service plan (a customized package of up to 20 advanced calling features, such as Caller ID and Call Waiting Deluxe, plus local phone service). For small business customers and other residential customers, BellSouth FastAccess service is available for $59.95 per month. The monthly price for BellSouth FastAccess service includes unlimited Internet access through BellSouth.net Internet service, but does not include the monthly charge for basic telephone service.

Through the end of the year, customers who order BellSouth FastAccess Internet service, will receive 30-days free with the purchase of a DSL modem for $100.00. And, the standard $99.95 Service Activation and $199.95 Installation fees will be waived.

BellSouth began deploying DSL service in seven initial markets in September 1998, and added 23 markets in 1999 to bring service to a total of 30 Southeastern markets. BellSouth FastAccess Internet service is presently available in some areas in the following Southeastern markets:
