BellSouth Enjoys Successful High-Speed ADSL Rollout; BellSouth.net(SM) FastAccess(SM) ADSL Internet Service Already Deployed in 27 of 30 Target Markets

Speedy Rollout Enables Residential and Small Business Customers With Internet Connections Up To 50x Faster Than Dial-up Service

For Immediate Release:

June 22, 1999

ATLANTA - BellSouth today announced that deployment plans for BellSouth.netSM FastAccessSM ADSL (asymmetrical digital subscriber line) Internet service have successfully brought the service to nearly all of the 30 cities currently targeted throughout the Southeast. The high-speed Internet access service offers residential consumers and small businesses lightning-fast connection speeds, starting at only $49.95 per month. BellSouth's rollout is on-schedule for deployment to all 30 target markets by year-end.

"BellSouth.net FastAccess service has been a strong addition to the host of Internet services offered by BellSouth," said Ray Smets, president, BellSouth.net Inc. "The aggressive speed and efficiency of this rollout has been very exciting, and we are in an excellent position to complete our rollout on-schedule."

A leader in delivering data services in the Southeast, BellSouth is providing BellSouth.net FastAccess service with a maximum download speed of 1.5 megabits-per-second (Mbps) and a maximum speed from the user's computer to the Internet of 256 kilobits per second (Kbps). It is an unlimited "always-on" Internet service with no waiting to dial up to connect. Web browsing becomes as simple as launching the browser to get connected at very high speeds.

"This deployment demonstrates BellSouth's commitment to meet customer demand for high-speed Internet access by delivering ADSL service quickly to residential and small business customers," said Bob Cunha, vice president of Broadband Services for BellSouth. "As the largest ADSL service rollout in the Southeast, the progress of our deployment is terrific news for our customers."

Utilizing state-of-the-art ADSL technology, the service works at speeds up to 50 times faster than standard dial-up service. Large data files such as audio files, research documents, product literature and patient records can be downloaded or transferred in seconds rather than minutes. Consumers can make travel reservations online, and small businesses can conduct electronic sales via the Internet in seconds.

BellSouth.net FastAccess service is available for $49.95 per month to BellSouth residential customers who subscribe to the BellSouth® Complete Choice® service plan (a customized package of up to 20 advanced calling features, such as Caller ID and Call Waiting Deluxe, plus local phone service). For small business customers and other residential customers, BellSouth.net FastAccess service will be available for $59.95 per month. One-time charges include $299.90 for installation and set up. The monthly price for BellSouth.net FastAccess service includes unlimited Internet access but does not include the monthly charge for basic telephone service.

BellSouth began deploying ADSL service in seven initial markets in September 1998 and plans to offer the service in a total of 30 Southeastern markets by the end of this year. The service will be available to nearly six million telephone lines that meet the technical specifications. Additional ADSL deployments will be scheduled in the coming years.
