BellSouth Leads Industry in Deployment of Broadband

ATLANTA - BellSouth continues to expand its broadband reach by deploying fiber optics in its state of the art network. Currently, 95% of BellSouth customers in its top 30 markets are within 12,000 feet of fiber and 89% of all customers are within 12,000 feet.

"We continue to aggressively deploy broadband to serve our customers' advanced data services needs today and tomorrow," said Duane Ackerman, chairman and chief executive officer of BellSouth.

BellSouth has been the leader in fiber optic deployment since 1980. For the past two decades BellSouth has reached the following milestones:

• BellSouth already has more than one million kilometers of fiber deployed throughout its operating territory.
• ADSL is already deployed in 30 major metropolitan areas throughout the Southeast.
• 100 percent of the Interoffice Network has fiber connectivity.
• BellSouth has more than 300 fast packet switches-274 Frame Relay and 57 ATM-in service today.
• SONET rings will double this year to almost 20,000.
