SPRINT LAUNCHES SECOND BROADBAND
MARKET; TUCSON GAINS INDEPENDENCE FROM SLOW INTERNET
CONNECTIONS The New Sprint Broadband
DirectSM Service Delivers High-Speed, Broadband Service to 85%
of the Greater Tucson Area
JUNE 29, 2000
TUCSON, AZ
TUCSON, Az., June 29, 2000 Following closely on the very
successful launch in Phoenix, Sprint (NYSE: FON) today
announced the launch of its second broadband wireless market
in less than seven weeks. Tucson, Arizona, becomes the second
metropolitan area in the United States to receive Sprint's new
broadband wireless service. The new high-speed Internet
service, called Sprint Broadband DirectSM, represents a truly
revolutionary method of providing two-way, broadband
connections to the Internet, using fixed wireless technology
and featuring the EarthLink Internet service.
Judging from the overwhelming response we have received in
Phoenix, it is clear that there is a huge pent up demand from
consumers for broadband access to the Internet, which is not
getting satisfied by cable modem or DSL providers said Tim
Sutton, president of Sprint's Broadband Wireless Group. Most
customers and small businesses across the U.S. still cannot
get broadband service, Sutton continued. The good news for
people in Tucson is that since our service doesn't depend on
wires, beginning today we can provide coverage to almost all
homes in the greater Tucson area -- and end what we
characterize as Broadband Envy.
Like many smaller markets in the U.S., Tucson hasn't been
on the roadmap for many broadband providers, commented George
Plew, general manager of Sprint's Tucson operations. Selecting
Tucson for the second market launch demonstrates Sprint's
dedication to the communities it serves by delivering a
service that people really need to get in touch with the rest
of the world, regardless of market size.
Tucson is the second in a string of numerous cities that
Sprint plans to launch in the next 8-10 weeks. And, as of
today, over 85% of the homes and businesses in the Tucson
metroplex can subscribe to Sprint Broadband Direct's
high-speed service for just $39.95 per month or $89.95 for
business customers.
The service provides multi-megabit download speeds and does
not require a second phone line to hook up a computer to the
Internet. The connection is always on when the customer is
ready to surf the World Wide Web ? no more dialing into a
modem bank multiple times to get a good connection and no more
getting bumped off-line during an important work session.
Since the technology is wireless, customers can get quick,
simple installation usually within a couple of days.
Now customers have an attractive service for combined local
broadband access and Internet Service Provider (ISP) service.
Sprint Broadband Direct will provide downstream burst rates of
up to 5 Megabits per second (Mbps), and commonly experience
download speeds of up to 1 Mbps.
Sprint Broadband Direct is a viable alternative for
customers who may not be within a Digital Subscriber Line
service area. With DSL service, the further away a customer is
from the local telephone company's central office that serves
their neighborhood, the more downloading and uploading speeds
decrease. As a result, customers across multiple neighborhoods
may experience different levels of throughput. Sprint's fixed
wireless service delivers the same throughput to customers
regardless of how close they are to the transmission site.
Since Sprint owns its entire broadband network and manages its
traffic for optimum performance 24 hours a day, 7 days a week,
customers don't have to deal with the their local telephone
companies.
How does it work?
Sprint Broadband Direct is based on an innovative
technology called fixed wireless. Unlike mobile wireless,
fixed wireless uses a stationary digital transceiver at the
home or business receiving the service. The transceiver is
pointed toward a radio transmission tower to send and receive
a signal. The digital transceiver is a small, 13.5 x 13.5
diamond-shaped device, which is less than half the size of the
common Direct Broadcast Satellite TV dish. The radio
transmission tower can send and receive high-speed Internet
data to customers that are up to 35 miles away, making it the
perfect service for nearly all customers in a metropolitan
area, including suburban and rural areas that are too far away
from the city to receive other broadband services. Service
also will be available to inner city neighborhoods that have
been excluded by other wired broadband providers.
