POLICY STATEMENTS |
 |
Corporate
Average Fuel Economy (CAFE) Standards AISI
supports ongoing market-based efforts to promote
energy-efficient vehicles in keeping with the
steel industry's longstanding commitment to energy
conservation. AISI strongly supports efforts by
the Congress to freeze CAFE standards at current
levels and opposes all efforts to increase CAFE
standards, because such a policy would be
counterproductive in terms of energy saving and is
unnecessary interference with market forces. AISI
agrees with legislative proposals to return
responsibility for light truck CAFS to Congress.

 |
Infrastructure/Buy
America AISI strongly supports increasing
federal, state and local government expenditures
on needed, productivity-enhancing infrastructure
improvements. AISI also strongly supports
continuing Buy American provisions at both the
federal and state government levels, especially
for steel-intensive government construction and
infrastructure projects; we call upon all
compliance offices to be vigilant in their
enforcement of the law. Lastly, AISI urges the
U.S. government to monitor carefully the benefits
obtained by U.S. manufacturers to ensure that
foreign signatories abide fully with the terms of
the expanded international Government Procurement
Code (GPC). |
 |
Transportatation AISI
supports a market approach to transportation
issues and the concept of deregulation of
transportation services. AISI endorses
governmental safety programs for all modes and
supports governmental funding necessary to keep
the roads and tracks open and the waterways
navigable, especially the Great Lakes in winter.
|
 |
The
Metals Initiative AISI supports the
continued existence of the Metals Initiative.
|
 |
National
Labs AISI supports the continued existence
and viability of the national laboratories and, in
particular, those programs that permit
public-private research partnerships. Accordingly,
we support recent initiatives within the national
laboratory system that encourage industrial
partnership. |
 |
Product
Liability AISI supports Product Liability
Reform legislation. |
 |
Workers
Compensation, Subrogation Rights AISI
opposes abrogation of the employer's right of
subrogation in workers compensation/product
liability situations. |
