CAFE Standards: Do the Benefits Outweigh the Costs?

The Coalition for Vehicle Choice (CVC) has worked to educate policymakers, the media and the public about the facts in the debate over higher Corporate Average Fuel Economy (CAFE) standards. CVC and its members recognize that public policies must be grounded in accurate information and sound analysis.

CVC is a non-profit organization representing over 40,000 automotive, insurance, consumer, farm, recreation, safety and law enforcement groups and individuals, interested in preserving the right of Americans to choose safe and affordable transportation. CVC believes that unrealistic increases in CAFE standards would not constitute sound public policy.

In keeping with CVC's commitment to provide reliable information on auto-related issues, this newsletter presents the facts about CAFE regulation. It examines the serious trade-offs that consumers face as a result of higher standards and includes a section on the Department of Transportation's plans for sharp increases in light truck CAFE standards. Do the benefits of CAFE standards outweigh the costs and trade-offs? Draw your own conclusions.
