HEADLINE: BP Amoco to Cut Sulfur Levels in Gasoline

BYLINE:  By The New York Times

DATELINE: DETROIT, March 6

BODY:
BP Amoco, the world's second-largest oil company, announced today that it planned to reduce sharply by the end of 2002 the level of sulfur contamination in virtually all of the premium gasoline that it sells in the United States.

The Ford Motor Company said the step would cut air pollution by up to half for cars burning the fuel and said models needing premium gasoline would receive a tankful of the new fuel before leaving the assembly plant. President Clinton announced new rules in December to require oil companies to reduce sulfur in all types of gasoline from 2004 to 2006. Most oil companies strongly opposed the rules during the drafting process, contending that they raised gasoline prices by six cents a gallon. But BP Amoco did not fight the regulations, and has been trying to market itself as more environmentally responsible than other oil companies.  http://www.nytimes.com
