Heritage Foundation Provides E-Calculator For Marriage Tax Penalty
(WASHINGTON, DC) – Georgia families can now easily determine just how much extra they pay in federal income taxes as a penalty for being married instead of just living together.   U.S. Rep. Charlie Norwood has announced that the Heritage Foundation, a Washington-based conservative think tank, has developed and published on the worldwide web a tax calculator which individual families can use to instantly determine how much they would save if the House-passed Marriage Penalty Relief Act became law.    However, President Clinton has vetoed the bill.

Norwood says the calculator clearly demonstrates on a personal level that the arguments against the reform measure are unfounded.  “This makes plain just how false the claim is that taxing married and single people at the same rate is ‘tax breaks for the rich’.   Now families in our district with access to the Internet can determine for themselves what this bill will do for their finances.  When they do, all the political distortions of the left will be shown for exactly what they are.”

House Votes To Overturn Clinton Veto Of Death Tax Repeal, But Fails To Garner Necessary Two-Thirds Majority
(WASHINGTON, DC) – The U.S. House of Representatives today voted to override President Clinton’s veto of the Death Tax repeal, by a bipartisan 273-157 margin, falling just 10 votes short of passage.  219 Republicans and 53 Democrats voted to overturn the veto and support the tax cut;  157 Democrats and 1 Republican voted to keep the death tax.   The measure initially passed the House on June 9 by a 279-136 vote.

10th District Congressman Charlie Norwood voted for the measure on both occasions, and called for both the House and Senate to continue efforts to repeal estate taxes.  “We lose far too many small Georgia farms and family businesses to the IRS every year,” Norwood says.   “It’s high time we protect our families from having to face both the undertaker and the tax collector when they lose a family member.”
