Democrats obstruct tax relief for farmers, ranchers and small business owners

September 7, 2000

U.S. Rep. Richard Pombo today voted to override the President's veto of legislation to repeal the federal death tax. Today's measure achieved bi-partisan support but fell just short of the two-thirds majority needed to override the veto. The House originally passed H.R. 8, the Death Tax Elimination Act, on June 9th by a vote of 279-136 with 65 Democrats supporting the bill.
"There's no question that the death tax is morally wrong -- after paying taxes all of your life, you shouldn't have to pay more taxes when you die. Anybody who doesn't think that the death tax ought to be repealed should come visit a Central Valley farm and see how difficult it has become to keep a family farm in the family. This issue isn't over. Al Gore will have to defend the Administration's veto for the rest of the campaign, and a death tax repeal will surely be introduced in the next Congress." Said Congressman Richard Pombo
Todays final vote was 274-157. Thirteen Democrats switched their votes. With one Republican missing the vote (two missed, but one of those is out of town), the 13 Dem switchers were the exact margin of defeat on the override.
