Supports over-ride of President’s veto of the estate tax repeal
Washington, D.C.— Keeping his commitment to fight to make
the tax code simpler and more fair, U.S. Rep. John E. Sununu (R-NH) today
voted to over-ride President Clinton’s veto of the estate tax repeal.
“It is simply wrong for the federal government to take 55% of what any individual owned simply because they pass away. Whether you are rich or poor, this is one of the most unfair provisions in our tax code,” said Sununu, a member of the House Budget and Appropriations Committees. “In New Hampshire, almost two-thirds of the job opportunities are provided by small businesses and there is no tax more punishing to these family-owned businesses than death taxes.” “That’s why the repeal of the death tax has received bipartisan support. Sixty-five Democrats joined most of the Republicans in supporting reform earlier this summer,” Sununu continued. “It’s unfortunate that President Clinton has vetoed the legislation. Ultimately, this vote is about simplifying the tax code and making it more fair. By eliminating the death tax, we reward success and provide incentives for small businesses to create economic opportunity for everyone.” President Clinton vetoed the Death Tax Elimination Act on August 31, 2000. With a 273-157 vote, the House did not reach the two-thirds margin of support needed to over-ride the veto.
