HEADLINE: A Tax That Seems to Hit a Nerve

BODY:

To the Editor:

The logic in Alan Wolfe's "Moral Sense in Estate Tax Repeal" (Op-Ed, July 24) escapes me. Mr. Wolfe suggests that an estate tax runs counter to the natural desire to accumulate money one can leave to one's children. Yet he notes that by 2005 the exemption to the tax will be $1 million, and of course only a percentage of the amount above the first $1 million goes to taxes.

Isn't leaving one's children $1 million, plus a large percentage of any amount above that, enough to satisfy most people's instincts for parental altruism?
