DEATH TAX
Publisher silent on tax relief for average citizen
BODY:
Regarding the
editorial on the death-tax repeal, I find it amusing that the
publisher is publicly pushing for tax relief that would benefit himself, his
heirs and other wealthy individuals ("Sustain family business with
death-tax repeal," May 30).
Yet, he is strangely silent on
relief from federal taxes for the average Washington state resident, namely
reinstating the state sales-tax deduction and eliminating the double tax
regarding Social Security.
After all, state (income) taxes elsewhere are
deductible. And since we pay income tax on our Social Security benefits,
shouldn't our contributions be tax-deferred just like other pension
contributions?
