Clinton calls
estate-tax repeal
'irresponsible,' pledges a veto
President Clinton promised to veto what he
termed an "irresponsible" repeal of the estate tax passed by a Congress he said
was bent on reckless spending. "In recent weeks, the Republicans in Congress
have done an about-face on our strategy of fiscal discipline," Clinton said in
his weekly radio address. But Republicans said they were ready to approve even
more tax-break legislation. In the GOP radio address, Rep. Pat Toomey, R-Pa.,
said the burgeoning federal budget surplus makes it the perfect time for
Congress to fix the so-called marriage tax and enact other tax cuts.

Bush closer to picking running mate
Texas Gov. George W. Bush said that he is
getting closer to picking a running mate but declined to detail the contenders.
The Republican presidential candidate met with former Defense Secretary Dick
Cheney, who is heading the search for a vice presidential candidate. Bush is
said to be considering New York Gov. George Pataki, Gov. Tom Ridge of
Pennsylvania and Oklahoma Gov. Frank Keating, as well as Sens. Chuck Hagel of
Nebraska and Fred Thompson of Tennessee.

Gore attacks Bush's
record in Texas
Al Gore zeroed in on Texas'
recent budget wrinkles to raise questions about Gov. George W. Bush's fiscal
discipline. "We can't go back to the days of deficits, debt and economic
decline," Gore warned. Determined to make Bush's gubernatorial record an issue
in the presidential race, Gore also drew attention to on a report that said more
than 1 million Texas children who qualified for federally funded summer
nutrition programs last year went unserved.

Driver charged in
bus-train collision
A grand jury charged school
bus driver Rhonda Cloer with three counts of vehicular homicide in a crash with
a freight train that killed three children at the Tennessee-Georgia border in
March. Cloer, 34, also was charged with reckless aggravated assault and with
failing to stop a school bus at a railroad crossing. Seven children were on the
bus the morning of March 28 when it was hit by a CSX freight train at the
crossing. Preliminary reports say Cloer did not stop at the railroad crossing as
required by law.
