Martin, Zion, and Chester Thigpen (second from right) present Senate Majority Leader Trent Lott (R-MS) with a petition to “Kill the Death Tax.”  Martin stated:  “It’s people like environmentally award winning Mississippi tree farmer Chester Thigpen, the 88-year-old grandson of slaves, who are effected by the Death Tax.  Thigpen is ‘land rich and cash poor’ and, at his death, his children and grandchildren may have to sell the family farm to pay the first claimant in line - - Uncle Sam -- not even a blood relative.  It is for the Chester Thigpens that we need to Kill the Death Tax.  Dying should not be a taxable event!"
