Senate Postpones Death Tax Vote,
Vote Now Set for Week of July 10

Sen. Majority Leader delays death tax vote. Wanting to wrap up work on as many appropriations bills as possible this week, Senate Majority Leader Trent Lott (R-MS) postponed a vote on H.R. 8 - The Death Tax Elimination Act. The Senate will address the bill the week of July 10 after it returns from its July 4 recess. Lott outlined an array of ways that the Senate could addres the bill.

"We will try to do the death tax under a unanimous consent agreement," Lott said. If they cannot get this they will attempt to invoke cloture (requiring 60 votes) to end debate. If cloture fails, Lott stated that death tax repeal will be included in the last reconciliation bill.

Senate Minority Leader opposes death tax repeal. Senate Minority Leader Tom Daschle (D-SD) voiced his opposition to the death tax repeal bill H.R. 8. "It isn't the focus of our attention right now simply because Senator Lott and I have an agreement to wait until July to have the full debate, Daschle said. "But certainly we will have an alternative. We will fight it vociferously."

Dealers urged to contact their Senators during July 4 recess. Capitalizing on the additional time given the vote delay and seeking to garner additional support for death tax repeal, AIADA has asked all dealers to contact their Senators during the recess and ask them to vote for cloture and for the death tax repeal bill H.R. 8.
