ASBA is the only
organization solely focused on advocating the interests of "micro"
businesses (businesses with fewer than 10 employees).
And a legislative advocate is needed.
Increasingly, state and federal governments are enmeshed in our
small businesses, from tax policy to health care to regulatory
requirements. The biggest costs small businesses must manage are a
direct result of government policy.
Over the last two years alone, ASBA has fought
aggressively for small-business owners. Some of our major
accomplishments have included
- Restoring the home office
deduction.
- Increasing the health insurance deduction
for the self-employed to 100% over the next 10 years.
- Cutting the estate tax, including creation
of a special exemption for small businesses.
- Establishing medical savings accounts,
which enable small-business owners and employees to control more
of their health care dollars.
- Reducing the capital gains tax rate,
including an exemption of up to $500,000 for the sale of a
principal home.
- Expanding IRA opportunities.
- Fighting against governmental health care
mandates that would drive up the cost of health insurance for
small businesses. Guaranteeing access to health insurance for
small businesses and individuals who conscientiously purchase
their health insurance.
