Conservation Groups Join Fight Against Death
Tax Conservation organizations have joined cattlemen in calling for an end to the death tax. A coalition of 30 ranching and conservation organizations wrote to each member of the House Ways and Means and Senate Finance Committees in support of HR 8 and S 38. The legislation is a 10-year phase-out of the death tax. The tax, which can be as high as 55 percent, is levied on property when the owner dies. Those who can't pay the tax often must sell portions of the land. "Death taxes have become a significant hurdle in the transfer of many historical ranches to younger generations," said Jason Campbell, federal lands director for NCBA. Jim Mosher, conservation director of the Izaak Walton League of America, said: "A repeal of the death tax will result in maintaining land for wildlife habitat and more ducks, deer, elk, etc." |
