2000 President Vetoes Estate Tax Contact: Dale Moore 202-347-0228 September 1, 2000 In spite of cattle producers’ hard work in pushing for elimination of death taxes, the president vetoed the measure Thursday afternoon. “We’re disappointed that the president has chosen to veto a bill that has obvious benefits for cattle ranchers,” NCBA president George Hall said. “Both houses of Congress passed the measure with bipartisan support, sending a clear message that estate taxes are costly and contribute to the demise of family farmers and other small businesses.” The president’s veto of the measure comes one week after NCBA president-elect Lynn Cornwell delivered the bill to the White House for the president’s signature. Anticipating the president’s action, Republican leadership has been working to drum up enough support to override the veto. NCBA will continue to work toward meaningful tax reform. |
