House considers Death Tax repeal
Release Date: 05/19/00

Unanimous support for the repeal of the telephone tax in the House Ways and Means Committee is stirring up support for other tax repeals. The committee is turning its attention to legislation designed to gradually eliminate the death tax over a period of 10 years, according to AP reports.

The leading version of the bill, sponsored by Rep. Jennifer Dunn, R-Wash., has the support of 238 co-sponsors, including 44 Democrats. The bill is expected to move out of committee next week.

The bill would be modeled after a provision in last year's Republican-proposed $792 billion tax bill that was vetoed by President Clinton. The legislation would reduce death taxes gradually in the first five years and then cut more dramatically in later years over the next decade.

Dunn said a coalition of farmers, small-business people and environmental groups concerned about land conservation are supporting its repeal.
