ALABAMA, September
8, 2000 -- The small business group NFIB today
praised U.S. Rep. Robert Aderholt (4th Dist. -
Ala.) for his vote to override President
Clinton's veto of legislation to repeal the
unfair and un-American death tax. "Small
business constituents in the 4th District thank
Rep. Aderholt for taking a stand today for small
business and voting to override the President's
veto of this important legislation," said NFIB
Senior Vice President Dan Danner. NFIB
counted today's vote to override the president's
veto of death-tax-repeal legislation one of the
most important votes of the 106th Congress and
will score it as an official "Key Vote" for
small business. NFIB Key Votes are used to
determine recipients of the organization's
coveted "Guardian of Small Business"
awards. "America's Main Street small
businesses paid close attention to today's
vote," said NFIB Senior Vice President Dan
Danner. "Make no mistake about it: small
business will remember those who stood tall for
small business. Likewise, small business will
remember members of Congress who caved to
political pressure from the Clinton-Gore
administration and deserted the early support of
death-tax relief." Congress earlier this
summer overwhelmingly passed landmark
legislation that would repeal the unfair,
un-American death tax on small, family-owned
businesses. In the U.S. House, 65 Democrats
helped form a bipartisan veto-proof majority.
Despite the bill's strong bipartisan support,
President Clinton vetoed it on August 31. In
Thursday's vote, the bipartisan supporters of
death-tax repeal fell shy of the two-thirds
majority necessary to override the veto, with a
274 to 157 vote. The inherently unfair nature
of the death tax and the economic benefits of
its repeal make repeal very popular among most
Americans. In a survey of NFIB members, 89
percent said the death tax should be repealed. A
1999 study by Americans Against Unfair Taxation
showed that the same percentage of people think
it is unfair for the government to tax a
person's earnings when it is earned, and then
tax it again after the person dies. The same
study showed that 84 percent of people know the
death tax doesn't only affect the rich, and a
poll by the 60-Plus group found that 73 percent
of voters said they would be more likely to vote
for a candidate who supports the death-tax
repeal. "Small business owners are smart and
politically-active," Danner warned. "This vote
will energize hundreds of thousands of small
business men and women to actively work for Rep.
Aderholt and other candidates who support their
interests." The National Federation of
Independent Business (NFIB) is the nation's
largest small business advocacy group. A
nonprofit, nonpartisan organization founded in
1943, NFIB represents the consensus views of its
600,000 members in Washington and all 50 state
capitals. CONTACT: Mary Mead
