Legislative Update—HR 8 will be in the Senate July 10

On June 9, the House of Representatives passed the Death Tax Elimination Act (HR 8) by a vote of 279-136. Every Republican representative present during for the vote and 65 Democratic representatives voted for the bill, with 20 members not voting.

The bill would phase out the death (estate, gift and generation-skipping) tax over a 10-year period and was introduced by Reps. Jennifer Dunn (R-Wash.) and John Tanner (D-Tenn.) at the start of the current congressional session. In addition, NRCA is a member of the Family Business Estate Tax Coalition, which has been working to get HR 8 approved by the House and Senate and signed by the president.

Senate Majority Leader Trent Lott (R-Miss.) will introduce HR 8 for debate in the Senate the week of July 10, and a final vote on the bill is expected later during the week.

Tell your state’s senators that you support estate tax repeal and ask them to vote in favor of the Death Tax Elimination Act by calling their Washington, D.C., offices. If you do not know your state’s senators' Washington telephone numbers, call the Capitol Switchboard at (202) 224-3121 and ask to speak with one of your state’s senators. If you have any questions or would like more information, contact NRCA’s Washington office at (800) 338-5765.
