Bill to House floor

The bipartisan Conservation and Reinvestment Act (CARA, H.R. 701) passed a major milestone Wednesday when the House Resources Committee voted to forward the conservation legislation to the House floor for full consideration. The legislation would provide conservation with the largest infusion of federal funds in history, $ 44 billion over the next 15 years. Much would go to various state and local conservation programs, including including nearly $ 22 million for Georgia wildlife in just one of the bill's seven programs.

Triple team

The last name Millsaps probably caused some double-takes, or maybe triple- takes, to those following the leaderboard in last weekend's Ranger Millennium M1 bass tournament near Cypress Gardens, Fla. Three brothers --- Jimmy Millsaps of Canton, Mike Millsaps of Acworth and David Millsaps of Woodstock - -- all competed in the big-money tournament. They also represented the family well; all three reached the top 50 semifinal round. David had the best showing, reaching the co-angler, or amateur, finals and finishing 10th, despite being shut out on the final day. Jimmy was 40th in the pro division and won $ 7,000. Mike finished 41st in the co-angler division and won $ 2,500. . . . The H.D. Marine Benefit for Children's Healthcare of Atlanta bass tournament on Lake Lanier last weekend raised $ 40,000 despite a drop in entries from the previous year. Jackie and Kelly Bagley of Adairsville won the event with a total of 24.7 pounds, including the opening day's big fish winner, a 7.58-pounder.. . . Glen Miller of Newborn and Jimmy O'Neal of LaGrange won the Durand-Wayland March of Dimes fall charity bass tournament on West Point Lake last weekend ($ 3,000) with a one-day weight of 14 pounds, 7 ounces. The big fish was a 6-6 bass caught by John Salers of Anniston, Ala. The tournament raised $ 1,290 for the March of Dimes. . . . John Smith and Billy Maddox, both of Macon, teamed to win the season-ending Patriotic Bass Anglers Top Six Championship on Lake Varner near Covington, catching a five- fish limit weighing 9.38 pounds. . . . Randy Jackson of Poplar Bluff, Mo., won last weekend's BASSMASTER Missouri Central Invitational held on Arkansas' Lake of the Ozarks with a three-day total of 14 bass weighing 34 pounds, 13 ounces.
