Lands Legacy

WHAT YOU CAN DO

In the Senate:

Now that the Senate Energy and Natural Resources Committee has reported the compromise version of CARA time is of the essence to get the bill to the Senate floor and ensure that the necessary changes are made. Defenders strongly encourages you to contact your senators and tell them to make the needed fixes to the CARA bill and then pass it.

Tell the President:

The Lands Legacy initiative is something that President Clinton has been pushing for almost two years now. It is time to let him know that you support him in preserving our nation’s precious natural treasures. Write President Bill Clinton and urge him to ensure the needed fixes are made so that CARA can be signed into law as the first landmark conservation legislation of the new century.

Points to Make:

When contacting either your Senators or the President, tell them that any final bill must:

  • Ensure that coastal funds cannot be spent on infrastructure and other construction projects that harm, rather than help, the environment.
  • Ensure that the federal portion of the Land and Water Conservation Fund will be spent and not subject to new and crippling procedural hurdles.
  • Eliminate incentives for new offshore oil and gas drilling.
  • Ensure planning and prioritization for state wildlife conservation funding so that states can better protect remaining biodiversity and reverse species declines.
  • Provide badly needed funding so that private landowners can help with the recovery of threatened and endangered species on their lands.
