Rallying For A Conservation
Victory:
NWF and its Grass Roots Lead
the Way
Hundreds of conservation minded
citizens from across the country joined the National Wildlife
Federation, a coalition of activists from all walks of life, and
members of Congress at a Capitol rally Thursday to push for passage
of landmark legislation to fund conservation of wildlife, wild
places and recreational areas. NWF President Mark Van Putten told
the crowd that the Conservation
and Reinvestment Act (CARA) is on the brink of success thanks to
the efforts of grass roots supporters everywhere. Yet despite the backing of at
least 63 Senators, the legislation still needs a final push to
make it to the Senate floor. Along with Van Putten, a wide array of
Senators and Representatives left little doubt that the bill, which
has already passed the House of Representatives, continues to have
strong bi-partisan backing. Members of Congress speaking at the
rally: Senators Mike DeWine (R-OH); Jeff Bingaman (D-NM); Chuck Robb
(DF-VA); and Representatives Don Young (R-AK), Chair House Natural
Resources Committee; George Miller (D-CA); Sherwood Boehlert (R-NY);
Ben Gilman (R-NY); Frank Pallone (D-NJ); Mark Udall (D-CO); Edward
Markey (D-MA); David Price (D-NC), and Darlene Hooley (D-OR). Hall
of Fame Pitcher Gaylord Perry and even a majestic bald eagle were
also on hand to lend their support.
