WASHINGTON - After meeting today with Hong Kong’s leading
democracy advocate, Martin Lee, Congressman David Dreier (R-CA),
Chairman of the House Rules Committee, issued the following statement
regarding human rights in China and the upcoming vote in Congress to
extend Permanent Normal Trade Relations (PNTR) to China:
"I was very pleased to again meet with Mr. Martin Lee and hear his
unique perspective on the human rights situation in Hong Kong and
China," said Dreier said. "For many years I’ve valued Martin Lee’s views
on the need to foster reforms that encourage greater liberty and freedom
in China. He shares my belief in the power of open markets to bring
about positive change in China, and he supports extending PNTR to
China."
After meeting with President Clinton yesterday, Lee said, "We have
come to support it [PNTR], principally for the reason of human rights
and the rule of law for China. If there’s no deal, then what? Would
human rights improve in China? Or would China in fact be more
suppressive seeing that the U.S. is no longer engaged?"
A member of the House Republican leadership, Dreier leads the annual
effort in the House to pass NTR for China.
