WASHINGTON - Congressman David Dreier (R-CA),
Chairman of the House Rules Committee, issued the following statement
regarding an agreement reached late last night on parallel legislation
to the Permanent Normal Trade Relations (PNTR) package moving through
the House Ways and Means Committee today:
"I want to commend my friends Doug Bereuter, Sandy Levin
and Phil Crane for their hard work in reaching this agreement. I
believe that bipartisan side legislation that recognizes the important
benefits that trade will bring to the Chinese people and addresses the
concerns many members may have with the Chinese government, will prove
a valuable addition to our PNTR legislative process.
"The forces of protectionism are strong, and this fight is not
over. The vote will be close, but I’m confident that a bipartisan
majority in Congress will do what’s right and pass PNTR
legislation."
A member of the House Republican leadership, Dreier leads the annual
effort in the House to pass NTR for China.
