HEADLINE: TRADE VOTE WON'T PUSH CHINA INTO DEMOCRACY

BODY:

I am somewhat disappointed at the recent passage of the permanent normal trade relations bill in the U.S. Senate. I fail to see how it will bring democracy to China anytime soon.

It would have been better to make passage conditional to some action from China to prove it is committed to a path toward democracy. One step would be a recognition of an opposition party or parties.

On June 4, 1989, hundreds, possibly thousands, of students were massacred on Tiananmen Square protesting for democracy.

The question then becomes: Would the Chinese massacre again, and, if so, why should we give them normal trade relations?
