HEADLINE: The Legacy of the 106th Congress

     First Session (1999)

     Impeachment Trial: The Senate voted to acquit President
Clinton on charges of perjury and obstruction of justice.

     Financial Services Reform: Approved a landmark repeal of
laws that had barred "one-stop shopping" in financial services
provided by banks, insurers, and brokerage firms.

     Legal Reform: Limited liability in lawsuits for year 2000
computer problems.
Second Session (2000)

     Trade: Approved permanent normal trade relations with
China, as well as separate legislation lowering tariffs and
barriers between the United States and nations in or around the
Caribbean Sea and in Sub-Saharan Africa.

     Environment: Approved ambitious $ 7.8 billion, 36-year
plan to restore Florida's Everglades.

     Social Security: Repealed the "earnings test" limiting
benefits for people who work after age 65.
