The Renewal of China's Normal Trade Relations Status
July 27, 1999

Once again, the House of Representatives voted to renew normal trade relations with China, despite that government's horrendous record of human and workers' rights' violations, the ballooning trade imbalance, and China's continued export of goods produced in forced labor camps. The Chinese government's recent crackdown on Falun Gong, a peaceful spiritual group, illustrates their unwillingness to abide by the rules of the world community.

Still, we are heartened by the fact that more members of Congress voted against the annual renewal of normal trade relations than last year.

Until China's very serious abuses of human and labor rights are addressed, China should not be granted permanent NTR status or accession to the World Trade Organization.
