"The Business Roundtable is pleased that President Clinton is extending Normal Trade Relations (NTR) status for China. It is the right thing to do, and a vital step toward normalizing our economic relationship with China. Trade with China is a cornerstone of a stable U.S.-China relationship and presents Americans with unprecedented opportunities with the world's most-populous country.

Renewing NTR is important, but it is also critical to press forward to resolve the remaining U.S.-China trade issues so that we can achieve the important objectives of China's admission into the World Trade Organization (WTO) and permanent NTR status, which will enable the United States to reap the benefits of China's WTO membership. Accomplishing these objectives this year will help assure U.S. competitiveness in the new millennium. NTR for China not only sustains hundreds of thousands of export- and import-related jobs, but it also supports U.S. companies operating in China."
