Joint Council Presidents Ask House Members To Vote For Working Families

(Washington, DC) - As the vote in the U.S. House of Representatives draws near, Teamster Joint Council Presidents from across the country are descending upon Congress in an effort to defeat Permanent Normal Trade Relations (PNTR) status for Communist China.

"This vote is very important to Teamsters across America," said International Brotherhood of Teamsters General President James P. Hoffa. "Our Joint Council Presidents have come to Washington to say, ‘If you don’t support working families now, we will hold you accountable in November.’"

Joint Council Presidents are regional leaders in the Teamsters Union. Local unions are organized into Joint Councils by geography.

"This vote will be very close," said Hoffa. "We think it is important for members of Congress to talk to Joint Council Presidents from their districts to get a grassroots view from beyond the Beltway."

The Teamsters Union has been at the forefront of the fight to defeat PNTR. In April, more than 5,000 Teamsters rallied on the Capitol grounds to oppose PNTR. The rally has been followed up with phone calls, letters, and office visits both in Washington and at the district level.

"Our voice will be heard," Hoffa continued. "Congress must acknowledge that this is a flawed deal for both American and Chinese workers."
