(Washington, D.C.) - International Brotherhood of Teamsters Human Rights Commission Director Cheryl Johnson today joined female Chinese human rights activists in calling on Congress to vote against granting Permanent Normal Trade Relations (PNTR) status for China. Johnson spoke following a meeting hosted by Rep. Marcy Kaptur (D-OH) discussing the effects PNTR will have on the lives of women in China. This meeting is an attempt to draw the attention of undecided female members of Congress to the plight of women in China.

"Today I call upon every woman who serves in Congress to stand up in support of our sisters in China who are suffering under this tyrannical Communist regime," said Johnson. "PNTR will not help these women."

The Teamsters Union believes that Communist China should not be rewarded with PNTR because of its atrocious record of human rights abuses, use of forced labor, and violations of past trade agreements. The State Department’s Human Rights Report, released on February 25, confirmed that conditions in China "markedly deteriorated" during the past year.

"I want to assure everyone here today that every woman...and every man...in the Teamsters Union is watching this vote," said Johnson. "We will not forget those who reward the rulers of China, who place more importance on PNTR than the lives of the women in their country."

The International Brotherhood of Teamsters represents more than 1.5 million hard working men and women throughout the United States and Canada.
