Area Congressmen Speak Out On
China/WTO
"Trade relations matter in the daily lives of people across
America. They matter because we want to preserve American jobs and
keep our economy strong. They matter because we want to uphold the
rule of law and respect for human rights. If we continue to ignore
worker exploitation in the form of sweatshops, labor camps, and
child labor around the world, there won’t be any living-wage jobs
left here in the United States. Workers make trade possible, and it
is time to start respecting that. As Congress prepares to vote for
permanent most-favored trading status for China, you can be sure I
will fight for trade agreements that contain basic protections for
workers."
Congressman Sherrod Brown
Ohio 13th District
"As one of the earliest and most vigorous opponents of Normal
Trading Relations with China, I am joining the efforts of the UAW to
warn members of Congress of the danger that unrestricted trade with
China will bring to American workers and manufacturers. I have
personally visited China and I am aware of the inhumane working
conditions that enable them to undercut the prices of our products.
I am not ready to subject our country’s workers to these same
indignities just to keep their jobs".
Congressman Frank Mascara
Pennsylvania 20th
District
"At your request, I am pleased to reiterate my position on
permanent normal trade relations with China, for inclusion in the
next issue of Solidarity. Unless the resolution for permanent Normal
Trade Relations (NTR) with China contains strong, enforceable
language that is pro-labor, pro-environment and pro-human rights (no
products produced by child labor or prison labor) for inclusion in
all U.S. trade agreements with China, I will vote against it."
Congressman Nick J. Rahall II
West Virginia 3rd
District
