UAW Opposes
Normal Trade Relations (NTR) With China/WTO
The UAW has launched an all-out campaign to stop permanent Normal
Trade Relations (formerly Most Favored Nation) status for China. The
UAW strongly opposes the recently negotiated U.S.-China trade
agreement to get China into the World Trade Organization. The
agreement contains no protections for worker and human rights. Nor
does it have adequate protections against import surges that cause
job losses for U.S. workers. Even administration officials
concede the deal would increase the already record-shattering U.S.
trade deficit with China. For these reasons, the UAW and our
progressive allies are asking the U.S. Senate and House of
Representatives to stand with us and oppose permanent NTR status for
China. Instead, we are asking Congress to continue its current
practice of reviewing China’s NTR status annually.
