House Vote on PNTR for China
Set for Wednesday, May 24

The House is scheduled to vote on legislation granting permanent normal trade relations (PNTR) to China on Wednesday, May 24th.

This Tuesday (May 23) the GOP controlled Rules Committee is expected to fold the side proposals crafted by Representative Levin into the body of the legislation granting PNTR to China. Thus, it is likely there will simply be a single vote on the entire package, with no amendments allowed.

The Levin side proposals are a toothless fig leaf. They do not contain any effective mechanisms to stop import surges that could threaten the jobs of American workers, or to force China to recognize basic worker and human rights. Accordingly, the UAW is strongly urging Representatives to vote against the legislation granting PNTR to China.

The vote is still expected to be extremely close. During these last few days we should continue to generate as much grass roots pressure as possible on Representatives.
