USWA Lobby, Rally & Protest Activities Against China PNTR

The following is a USWA schedule of activities during the Apr. 9-16 series of protest and rally events in Washington, D.C. to lobby Congress against the proposed vote on Permanent Normal Trade Relations (PNTR) for China.

As of this week, USWA members have mailed 208,000 handwritten letters to their Members of Congress, opposing the China PNTR vote. Photo opportunities in Washington, D.C. include Steelworkers wearing "No China PNTR" T-shirts and ball caps; numerous banners and signs; a USWA "rolling billboard/street blimp" that will be parked and routed Apr. 12-16 on a schedule with the coordinated events. (The slogan displayed on the street blimp, "Don't Reward Oppression, No China PNTR" will be featured with photo art of a Chinese soldier choking a worker). The USWA has also placed billboards with the same message for display in targeted congressional districts. "No China PNTR" brochures and USWA printed materials associated with the demonstrations are available on request.

April 9

The Jubilee 2000 rally event on the National Mall in Washington, D.C., will have Steelworkers' participation from 12:00 Noon to 4:30 pm in support of a worldwide campaign endorsed by 100 fairth and labor organizations to urge Congress to erase third world debt.. The climax of the day's activities will be the formation of a human chain around the U.S. Capitol building; behind the White House and over to the World Bank and International Monetary Fund.

April 11

Steelworkers and student activists will be producing signs/placards for the AFL-CIO "No China PNTR" Rally at a room posted by the USWA in the Marriott Wardman Park (Woodley Rd. & Connecticut Ave., NW). Time: 6:00 pm. to 8:00 pm.

April 12

The USWA expects 2,000 members to participate in the AFL-CIO rally at the Capitol, arriving on buses (22), planes, trains and cars. USWA Pres. Becker will lead the assembled Steelworkers on a brief march at 10:30 am from the Taft Memorial (New Jersey Ave. & Louisiana Ave.) to the AFL-CIO rally at the West Front of the U.S. Capitol. Steelworkers will be wearing "No China PNTR" T-shirts & ballcaps. Following the rally, Steelworkers will be transported to the Marriott Wardman Park Hotel (Woodley Rd. & Connecticut Ave., NW) with a briefing session (3:00 to 5:00 pm) for the USWA's "lobby day" on Apr. 13.

April 13

About 1,500 Steelworkers will participate in a USWA lobby day (Apr. 13, 9:30 am to 4:30 pm) with appointments to see nearly all members of Congress in the states where USWA members live and work. A 'big assembly tent' and a 'media tent' will be setup (11:00 am to 5:00 pm) at a staging area on the grounds of the Capitol Reflecting Pool (adjacent to Third St, NW).The tents will serve as a reporting and snack area for USWA members to gather when they are not lobbying. (The media tent will be used to assist news reporters for interviews and cell phone call-outs for localized interviews with Steelworkers from home market areas). The Steelworkers will then be transported to Lafayette Park across from the White House for a candlelight vigil that begins at 7:15 pm under a USWA stage banner, "Workers' Freedom Lights the Way, Steelworkers' Candlelight Vigil for Exploited Workers." A lighted sound stage setup with a multbox will feature a diversity of trade coalition speakers. Some 25 other locations around the U.S. will also be holding simultaneous candlelight vigils at district congressional offices. April 14

A Steelworkers' and student "Teach-In" will be sponsored at the Marriott Wardman Park Hotel (Woodley Rd. & Connecticut Ave., NW), 9:00 am to 12:00 Noon, with breakout sessions planned.

April 16

The IMF/World Bank demonstrations will have Steelworkers' participation. USWA President George Becker is a scheduled speaker at the National Mall event gathering in Washington, D.C., which starts at 11:00 am.
