Congressman Sabo to
Receive a Humane Legislator of the Year Award:
American Humane Association Honors Sabo for Supporting Key Animal Issues
in Congress
May 10, 2000
Washington -- Congressman Martin Olav Sabo (D-MN)
today will receive a "Humane Legislator of the Year" award from the American
Humane Association (AHA). AHA chose Sabo to receive the award based upon
his support for key legislative issues affecting animals in the 106th Congress.
"Congressman Sabo is a true friend to animals," said
Timothy O'Brien, president of AHA. "For 123 years, the American Humane
Association has worked to protect animals and children from abuse, cruelty and
neglect. We're glad to present Congressman Sabo with a Humane Legislator
of the Year award for joining us in that fight."
"I am honored that AHA has chosen to recognize my work,"
said Congressman Sabo. "We in Congress should support policies that
protect animals from exploitation."
In presenting its Humane Legislator of the Year awards,
AHA considered the support Members of Congress have given to key legislative
issues affecting animals during the 106th Congress. These include:
- The lethal predator control amendment to H.R. 1906 (Agriculture
Appropriations) to cut western ranch subsidies and discourage the use of
lethal trapping methods.
- The steel jaw leghold trap amendment to H.R. 2466 (Interior
Appropriations) to restrict taxpayer funding of programs that allow commercial
or recreational trapping on national wildlife refuges using steel jawed
leghold traps or neck shares.
- The dolphin protection amendment to H.R. 2670 (Commerce, Justice, State,
and Judiciary Appropriations) to limit U.S. funding of the international tuna
fishing convention. This convention allows deadly nets to be used on
dolphins.
- H.R. 1887, which prohibits distribution and interstate commerce of
depictions of animal cruelty, mainly so-called "crush videos."
- H.R. 1275, which would close a loophole in the Animal Welfare Act that
allows some interstate shipment of fighting birds and undermines enforcement
of the cockfighting ban in 47 states.
- H.R. 443, which would require humane euthanasia of farm animals too sick
or injured to walk into slaughterhouses. H.R. 443 would also prohibit
the sale of such animals.
