ANIMAL OVERPOPULATION WON'T BE CURED BY SARCASM - WELL, MAYBE
BYLINE: By Kurt O. Munger; By Muriel A. Sanzo
BODY:
In response to the letter from Susan Gundich
(July 22) about rabbit and deer overpopulation. Such pomposity and
self-righteousness is a help to no one, much less the animals she means to
defend. The absence of any natural predators to control their
proliferation necessitates wildlife management for the good of all species.
Gundich's sarcasm indicates an unwillingness to accept the fact that
controlled hunts are the only way to reduce the number of these animals that
have become more urbanized. Failure to do so will result in more diseased and
starving animals that will exhaust the food supply of other animals less able to
adapt. These so-called animal lovers can't see the forest for the trees. Urban
sprawl has displaced these animals from the fields and meadows that were their
habitat. Perhaps if we were more willing to live in centralized communities
these hunts would be less frequent.

I have read with interest the recent articles regarding the
overpopulation of deer, rabbits and geese.
Perhaps I have a solution. We
can round up all the frustrated hunters, commandos, mercenaries, Ku Klux
Klansmen, jocks and maybe a few road-rage crazies and have them deputized. Then
they should be dispersed at a designated time to take care of the overpopulation
for once and for all. (There's a cranky blue jay and a couple of noisy squirrels
in my yard that I would like to have included in this hunt.)
