HOUSE BILL TARGETS
PREDATOR CONTROL
INTERIM BOARD WOULD ESTABLISH STATE PLAN
BYLINE:
By Gary Gerhardt, News Staff Writer
BODY:
Legislation calling for the creation of an interim management board to establish a state plan to
control predators
took some of the burden off wildlife biologists Thursday.
At a meeting of the state Wildlife Commission, biologist Gene Schoonveld said that H.B. 1483 changed the emphasis of the plans the state Division of Wildlife was ready to report. "I worked on the coyote management plan since January and can tell you this will be one of the most contentious issues we have," he told commissioners.
"It has many facets, including human dimensions, which is the study of how the public will receive it."
For several years, agriculturists, outfitters and sportmen's groups have pushed the Division of Wildlife to address the predator problem. They believe that bears, mountain lions and coyotes have had a substantial impact on declining mule deer populations.
Conservationists argue these groups are using that issue as an excuse to strike back against Amendment 10, which bans spring bear hunting, and Amendment 14, which restricts trapping.
The panel is to consist of a representative from farming and ranching, a sporting group, a wildlife organization, the scientific community and an environmental group. The commissioner of agriculture and the director of the Department of Natural Resources will co-chair the effort.
